President tests positive for Covid-19

Maldives’ President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has tested positive for Covid-19.

In his official Twitter, he said in Dhivehi that he found out he was positive for Covid after doing the PCR test on Saturday evening, as he was set to travel to the islands.

He said he was doing well and is currently isolated at his residence.

Maldives has been witnessing a surge in Covid cases since the highly contagious Omicron variant have become dominant within the community. The daily Covid cases have reached above 1,500 over the past week, after months of remaining below 200 cases on average.

However, Health Protection Agency (HPA) has said they would place further restrictions after observing the hospitalization rates. Currently the precautionary steps taken are social distancing and making PCR tests mandatory to travel outside of the Greater Male’ Area, in addition to decreasing school hours in the Male’ area as well.
