IGMH announced on Thursday that the hospital is suspending all routine surgeries due to the surge of Covid-19 cases in Maldives.

In the statement made by the hospital, they stated some changes will be brought to the services they provide, in light of the current Covid-19 situation. As such they had planned to downgrade some of the services they provide.

One such service they are downgrading is the availability of routine surgeries. From Saturday, January 22, all routine surgeries will be suspended for a period of two weeks.

However, all emergency services will be available in IGMH 24 hours of the day.

The hospital said they would announce when this service would be resumed at a later date. The decision will be made after observing the Covid cases within the community.

In a separate announcement, IGMH had said they were also bringing about changes to some of the services provided by their Out-Patient Department. This includes downgrading their laboratory services until January 29, and decreasing the amount of patients they see each day.

IGMH had suspended some of their services on previous occasions as well when Covid cases surged in the community. Some services had been provided online then.

Maldives is currently observing a spike in Covid cases due to the Omicron variant of Covid-19 that is the most dominant strain globally at the moment. The increase in cases was first observed in the beginning of this month. On Wednesday, over 2,000 people tested positive for Covid, one of the most recorded cases within a 24 hour period in Maldives.

The total number of people currently suffering from the virus in the Maldives is now over 9,000. A total of 43 people with Covid are hospitalised.
