Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced that two people had passed away from COVID-19 on Monday.

This has increased the COVID fatalities in Maldives to 225.

The agency said a 92 year old Maldivian woman brought to the Addu COVID Management Facility was declared dead on Monday morning while a 49 year old Maldivian woman admitted in Hulhumale’ Medical Facility (HMF) had passed away in the afternoon.

They were the third and fourth deaths of this month.

The spread of the coronavirus appears to be largely controlled in Maldives, especially in the capital Male’ where nearly one-third of the nation’s entire population lives. Even though there has been a significant amount of cases in the southern atolls, the high vaccination rates have lead to fewer fatalities and a lower number of people requiring hospitalisation as well.

As of Monday evening, only 16 of the 1,641 people with active COVID infections were hospitalised.

Maldives is aiming to inoculate 90 percent of its entire eligible population before August is over. The country have also started to vaccinate children between the ages of 12-17 with the Pfizer vaccine.

So far 372,777 people have received one dose of the COVID vaccine while 299,588 people have been fully vaccinated.
