COVID-19: Death toll reaches 172

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has announced two more people that passed away from COVID-19. This has made the death toll reach 172.

On Wednesday, HPA announced the death of a 84 year old Maldivian man that passed away around 2:30 pm. He was admitted in Hulhumale' Medical Facility (HMF). He was the 171st COVID fatality in Maldives.

The 172nd COVID death in Maldives was a 62 year old man, also admitted in HMF. He passed away around one in the morning on Thursday.

So far eleven people have passed away this month.

Maldives saw one of the worst surges in COVID-19 cases from late April 2021 to mid-May. To control the rapid spread of COVID, Greater Male' Area was put in a lockdown on May 26.

Daily COVID numbers have started decreasing this week, after being above 1,000 for several weeks.
