Three people arrested on Thursday were accused of working with religious extremist groups and planning a terror attack in Maldives.

The trio was remanded by the Criminal Court for 15 days.

Since the attack on Former President and Majilis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on May 6, Police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) have been holding joint operations against terrorism in Maldives. Three people were arrested in Male' on Thursday during these operations.

Criminal Court permitted for the three of them to be held in police custody for 15 days while the investigation is ongoing. They are accused of working with religious extremists, planning an attack that may affect the national security of Maldives. Police have said another party were also working with them but they did not disclose that information.

These three individuals were also accused of supporting terrorist organisations and sending people to fight in conflicted areas in the name of Jihaad, in addition to praying in separate gatherings. They were also accused of holding classes that would spread religiously extremist views.

Four people had been arrested in direct relation to the attack on Nasheed. Their remand duration have been extended as well.
