Maldives records 1,091 new COVID-19 cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Sunday announced that 1,091 tested positive for COVID-19, while 307 people recovered.

That was the highest number of positive cases recorded in Maldives within a 24 hour period. HPA had said out of over 1,000 recorded cases today, 300 cases fall under backlogs of sample taken from 48 hours ago while 791 samples that tested positive were taken within the previous 24 hours.

This increased the confirmed COVID cases in the country to a total of 35,815.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 939 were from the greater Male’ region, 147 cases from residential islands, six cases from operational resorts, three cases from liveaboards and two from islands under development.

Maldives is currently in its worst COVID wave still date. With 9,433 active cases, this is the highest the figure has been.

Currently, 250 people are hospitalized, Maldives have seen 84 fatalities so far.

In February 2020, Maldives started it's vaccination program, and so far 300,906 people have been given the first dose of the vaccine while 130,886 people have received the second dose.

HPA had revealed earlier on Sunday that three out of five samples tested in Greater Male' Area result in a COVID positive case. Within a two week period, HPA said, the positivity rate at flu clinics have increased by four times.

"With the current surge in increase in cases and increased instance of disease severity, 80 percentof COVID treatment facilities of Greater Male' Area are already occupied. Even more patients are expected to be hospitalised in the upcoming days,"HPA had said via twitter.

In order to control the new surge of cases. With the increase in COVID numbers, HPA has announced a curfew from 2100hrs to 0400hrs every night.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 158 million people and claimed over 3.30 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 137 million people have recovered.
