COVID-19: Maldives record 590 cases, 210 recoveries

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Tuesday announced that 601 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Maldives, while 134 recovered from the disease.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 439 were from the greater Male’ region, 141 cases from residential islands, nine cases from operational resorts and one case from liveaboard.

Although the number of cases started to decline earlier in April, figures have been increasing at a worrying rate recently.

In order to control the new surge of cases. With the increase in COVID numbers, HPA has been announcing stricter restrictive measures. Starting Thursday, May 6, at 2100 hours, a curfew will be in effect until 0400hrs every night.

Additionally, both government and private sector employees have been asked to work from home as well.

Currently, the island nation records a total of 34,724 virus cases of which 8,640 are active cases, in addition to 25,992 recoveries and 83 deaths.

Notably, this marks the first time the number of active cases surpassed 6000.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 158 million people and claimed over 3.29 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 136 million people have recovered.
