Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Thursday expressed gratitude towards the countries that have urged to hasten the process of Maldives being reintegrated into the Commonwealth.
A tweet by the Foreign Minister stated that India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Canada and Rwanda expressed their wish for Maldives to be fast tracked back into the Commonwealth, at the Commonwealth Foreign Minister's meeting held in London.
Noting that the ties between Maldives and these countries run deep, Minister Shahid thanked them wholeheartedly for their support.
Maldives pulled out of the Commonwealth in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration, claiming that the organisation differentiated between the island nation and other countries and meddled in Maldives' internal affairs.
However, the incumbent administration requested to rejoin the Commonwealth shortly after President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's inauguration into office. Documents required to rejoin the organisation were presented and a Commonwealth delegation also paid a visit to assess the situation of the country.
