Maldives Media Council (MMC) is expected to press charges against a local website and affiliated Facebook page over misuse of copyrighted content.

The website is found in breach of using content from local news media websites for commercial use.

The council's president Mohamed Shafaau told Mihaaru News, that the association members during Wednesday's meeting, on August 10, agreed to file the matter with Maldives Police Service.

"The site was using content off of local news websites illegally. Content has been made available on subscription-basis, with full content access after subscription," Shafaau commented.

The website had illegally gathered content from major local news media. Basic subscription for the site is MVR 30 per month, with payment account reflected at the subscription notice.

"We checked whom the account belonged to, from which we identified that it belonged to a private individual. We will be sharing these details with Maldives Police," Shafaau added.

Following the association's call on pressing charges against the website, the site has since been deactivated. The site's linked Facebook page has been taken down as well.

According to the Maldives Copyright Act, illegal use of documents, articles or other written material is a criminal offense, subject to a punitive measure between MVR 50,000 to MVR 300,000 fine.
