Minister of Health Dr Abdulla Khaleel has described the introduction of the National Air Ambulance Service as a huge success which has offered convenience to people across the country.

The Minister made these remarks while speaking at a press conference held last Thursday.

The Ministry further said that efforts are ongoing to introduce medevac helicopters as well before the end of the year.

The National Air Ambulance service currently has a Dash-8 aircraft and a seaplane.

In March, the initial month after introduction, the two flights collectively made 58 trips. In April, the flights made 64 trips, and so far in May, 31 trips have been made. In total, 153 trips have been made by the air ambulances to date, transporting 196 patients.

The Minister said that conducting outreach programs in islands would assist in identifying which services need to established there, and which services are most in demand. This information can be used in the provision of ambulance services as well.

Once services are broadened in the islands, medical treatment can be provided on site instead of making referrals, he said.

This, the Minister noted, would bring down costs and aid in prioritizing cases which would need the most assistance.
