Sports Commissioner Mohamed Tholal has reiterated his directive, advising against proceeding with the Badminton Association's election process.
Tholal stated today that he had initially urged the association to refrain from initiating the election process even before any official announcements were made.
"In a letter sent prior to the announcement of the elections, we highlighted certain provisions within the association's governing rules that needed adherence. Given the receipt of complaints from clubs and players regarding additional issues, it was imperative to address these concerns and make necessary amendments to the rules before proceeding with the elections. Despite this, the elections were still announced and we have reaffirmed this directive today," Tholal explained.
Tholal mentioned that both the public and certain players have filed complaints regarding the voting process at the BAM elections, specifically concerning the Development Center's (BDC) vote. He stated that a letter has been dispatched to address and resolve the issue.
"The BDC’s were emerged in the atolls as a focal point. But when BDCs come and vote in the elections, the committees are not even registered with the Sports Commissioner's office," he said.
"When we sent the letter, the Badminton Association informed us that the BDCs are allowed to vote in the Congress on the basis of the rules that allow members registered with the Badminton World Federation and the Badminton Asia Council to vote. However, when we look at how countries registered with the Regional and World Federations can vote, the number of votes cast, and also the voting procedures, it is clear that this is not the case.”
Over the past four years, during the association's audit of accounts and submission of financial details, it was discovered that the reports failed to meet audit standards.
The Badminton Association has disclosed that the elections will take place in Addu Equatorial Village on March 22. The application process remains open until the upcoming Sunday.
