Sports Commissioner Mohamed Tholal has urged the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) to disclose the details of the association's upcoming elections on January 31, 2024.
Tholal urged FAM to provide the details on Sunday, December 24, and gave the association a two-day period to disclose the requested information.
Mihaaru News is privy to the information contained in a letter signed and sent by Tholal to FAM, demanding the details of the upcoming election.
Mihaaru News contacted Tholal to verify the authenticity of the letter. He confirmed sending a letter to FAM after learning about the association's election through the media. However, he did not disclose any other details mentioned in the letter.
The document received by Mihaaru News supposedly contained details of the said letter, highlighting FAM's failure to notify the Sports Commissioner of the scheduled election within the upcoming 45 days.
The commissioner in his letter, also stressed becoming aware of the election explicitly through media and some of the sports clubs.
"I have learned, via social media and some of the clubs, of the decision made at the 20th Executive Committee meeting of the FAM, to hold the association's election 45 days from December 17, 2023, as announced in your statement with reference number FAM/IUL/2023/001," Tholal apparently stated in his letter to FAM.
FAM made the said announcement last Sunday, confirming the association's decision made at the 20th executive committee meeting to hold the election 45 days from December 17.
In addition to questioning the authenticity of FAM's announcement, Tholal demanded details on five other aspects of the election.
"As such, the Commissioner of Sports demands the association to confirm the authenticity of the announcement, along with the below-mentioned information, within the next two days in writing," the Sports Commissioner said in his letter.
1. The finalized decision for FAM's election
2. The reason for Executive Committee at its 20th meeting to agree on an election while significant time remains in the committee's term
3. The agenda and the minutes of the 20th Executive Committee meeting
4. The attendance of the 20th Executive Committee meeting
5. The permanent members list of FAM
In his letter, Tholal demanded the reasons for the association to hold its election to elect the next president, given that the current president, Bassam Adeel Jaleel, has more than six months left in his term.
