President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the government prioritizes fisheries as a key sector for economic growth and aims to empower fishermen.
During his ongoing visit to Alifu Alifu and Kaafu atolls, President Muizzu said that there are approximately 13 fishing vessels in Rasdhoo, and he aims to support the construction of more vessels to expand the fisheries sector.
The President highlighted the importance of ice for fishing and reiterated the government’s commitment to increasing the number of ice plants across Maldives.
Establishing these facilities is part of the government’s manifesto, and efforts are underway to achieve this goal within the next year, utilizing funds from Saudi Arabia and other sources, President Muizzu said.

Loans are currently being issued to install Refrigerated Seawater (RSW) systems on vessels, allowing fishermen to produce their own ice and safely store their catch. President Muizzu stated that many fishermen have already benefited from these loans and that the government plans to expand the program further next year.
“We want the government not to own or control everything but to empower fishermen and businesses, and island councils will have the option to take over the operation of ice plants,” he said.
President Muizzu said that his administration's first year faced challenges caused by economic downturn, and saving the country from default had become a primary focus.
