COVID-19: Maldives identifies fourth death as prominent businessman Hussain Abdulla

Prominent businessman Hussain Abdulla, the owner of renowned importers MHA Pvt Ltd, was identified as the fourth individual to have succumbed to COVID-19 in the country.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on late Wednesday evening confirmed the death of the 88-year old while undergoing treatment for COVID-19 at Dharumavantha Hospital. The first recorded fatality caused by COVID-19 was Abdulla's spouse, 83-year-old Aminath Adam.

A known religious scholar and philanthropist, Abdulla built a school within his residence, on his home island of Maroshi, Shaviyani Atoll, in 1976. The institution named 'Al Madhrasathul Munavvara' was upgraded over the '80s with modern facilities and later handed over to the government in 2007. The school's first Cambridge O' Level examinations were held in 1998. Abdulla headed the school for over 27 years.

Conferred the Order of Nishan Kalaafaanu in 2011 for his various contributions to society, Abdulla was also awarded the National Award of Recognition in 1992 and 2005, respectively. He had previously served as the island chief of Maroshi as well.

Maldives now records a total of 968 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 924 active cases, four fatalities and a total of 40 recoveries. Capital city Malé, one of the most densely populated places in the world, has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 cases since recording its first local transmission on April 15.

On March 12, 2020, the World Health Organization classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 4.44 million people and claimed over 298,322 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, 1.66 million people have recovered.
