Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), on Saturday, held a ceremony to mark the commencement of the project to build a water and sewerage system in Kinolhas, Baa Atoll.

The formalities were initiated by MWSC Chairman Ahmed Mausoom and Managing Director Hassan Shah. The island’s current MP Hassan Ahmed, parliamentary representative for the Inguraidhoo Constituency (which consists of Aaa Atoll’s Fainu, Inguraidhoo, Innamaadhoo, Rasmadhoo and Kinolhas islands) was also in attendance.

According to MWSC, work on the project including laying pipes, is already on the way, since the necessary equipment for the project was sent earlier.

The company also records, at present, completion of up to 52 percent for the building facility intended to house the facility’s water plant.

Kinolhas’ water and sewerage project, which reportedly carries a price tag of MVR 36 million, is expected to yield a water piping network that spans 11.8 kilometres, a sewerage network of 6.4 kilometres in length, a 700-meter pumping line, two pumping stations and a sea outflow.

The project also includes the building of a reverse osmosis plant, treatment and a maintenance facility.

Further, MWSC is contracted to provide resources necessary for the operation of the water and sewerage system, including generator sets, vehicles and filtration equipment.

According to state-owned MWSC, work is expected to conclude within 22 months.

MWSC has launched numerous such projects recently, many of which initially faced postponement due to the emergence of the COVID19 pandemic.

Establishing fully-functional sewerage and water treatment plants in numerous local islands is one of incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s key electoral pledges.
