On the occasion of World Health Day on April 7, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih noted the bravery of Maldivian healthcare professionals amid the ongoing "global health crisis of our generation".

Celebrated since 1950 by the United Nations, the main theme for this year is to honour 'the work of nurses and midwives and remind world leaders of the critical role they play".
"Nurses and other health workers are at the forefront of COVID-19 response - providing high quality, respectful treatment and care, leading community dialogue to address fears and questions and, in some instances, collecting data for clinical studies. Quite simply, without nurses, there would be no response", said the World Health Organization.
Declared 'International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife' by WHO, the organization and its partners will compile and submit a series of recommendations to further strengthen nursing and midwifery.
Presently, Maldives records 19 confirmed and six active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 13 recoveries. While there are two confirmed cases of Maldivians, no local to local transmissions have been recorded.
WHO has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 1,348,470 people and claimed over 74,799 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 285,090 people have recovered.
