President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the allowance for single mothers will be increased next year.

In response to a question raised by a resident of Fuvahmulah as part of the government's series "President's Answer" to public queries, President Muizzu stated that he has committed to increasing allowances for single mothers.

The pledge to increase allowances for single mothers will be fulfilled, but it is not scheduled within this year's budget due to planned initiatives to improve the economy. President Muizzu said that this effort will be undertaken next year.

"We will increase the allowance for single mothers next year. We are working on it this year as well. It is a priority for us," President Muizzu said.

In response to the resident's question, the President stated that more attention and care will be given to orphans and underprivileged children in society.

The allowance, introduced during former President Mohamed Nasheed's tenure, was revised in 2016 under former President Abdulla Yameen. Such families receive a maximum of MVR 3,000 per month, each child receiving MVR 1,000. This amount was increased to MVR 10,000 during former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's tenure. During the presidential campaign, President Muizzu pledged to further increase the allowance to MVR 12,000.
