Prosecutor General's (PG) Office on Wednesday pressed charges against Abdulla Luthfee, one of the conspirators behind the 1988 coup d'état, who was a fugitive from justice until his arrest last year.
Speaking at a press briefing, PG Hussain Shameem stated that the Office has indicted Luthfee but did not disclose details of the charges.
"I presume the matter has been submitted for trial now. We shall share further information later," he said.
The coup attempt on November 3, 1988, claimed the lives of 19 Maldivians. Luthufee and fellow conspirator Sagar Ahmed Nasir were both put on death row, until former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom reduced their sentences to life imprisonment, which was 25 years in prison according to the then-constitution.
Luthfee absconded and went into hiding in Sri Lanka when he was allowed to travel abroad for medical purposes during the presidency of Mohamed Nasheed in 2010. He was extradited from Sri Lanka in July 2019.
Sagar Ahmed Nasir has been freed after completing his jail sentence of 25 years. Had Luthfee not fled in 2010, he would have completed serving his initial sentence by 2014.
