Izzuddin School's current building needs major repairs and the government is informing what would happen of their children's education.
With Izzuddin School's building structure in poor condition, the Ministry of Education has decided to close down the school and transfer all students to other schools with the Malé City area.
This comes as Izzuddin School was found to have a large crack on the building's third floor with the safety assessment report by Infrastructure Ministry engineers suggesting the need for major repairs before being suitable for long term use.
Mihaaru reported today that the decision is now being communicated to students and their parents via meetings. While some parents were informed yesterday in a meeting, those who were unable to attend the session will be met with tomorrow.
The Ministry's decision right now is to change all the students to different classes at Dharumavantha School, which is directly opposite of Izzuddin School. However, parents who wish to have their children in other schools would get that opportunity as well.
However, the ministry is yet to formally comment on the matter.
A parent who attended the meeting with the Education Ministry told Mihaaru anonymously that Principal Nadira assured parents that those who want to keep their children at Izzuddin School would have the opportunity to do so.
"The principal said teaching would continue even with one student. But many parents are now getting their names noted to transfer their children to other schools," the parent said.
The last date to register for the school transfer is 12:00 pm, Sunday.
Parents also shared that Principal Nadia shared with them that she is to become the new principal of Dharumavantha School.
"The principal is also set to become the principal of Dharumavantha School. So we don't see a reason why we should keep our children at Izzuddin School," a parent said.
Last week, the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) of the school also met with Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu. A parent who attended the meeting told Mihaaru that the Minister revealed that extensive renovation would be required, given how old the building is. The parent also shared that the Minister said it cannot be assured whether the building can be used safely without repair.
The building in question was first used as the Malé English School (MES) school before being remodelled to become Izzuddin School back in 2021.
Speaking on the topic, the Education Minister last said that another school would not be changed to the same building, nor would the space be given to a third party.
