Minister of Higher Education Dr Mariyam Mariya, in her speech today on the occasion of International Labour Day, has said that everyone must shoulder the responsibility and work towards eliminating workplace discrimination and injustice.

Along with International Labour Day, Maldives also celebrates the day as the country’s Civil Service Day. The Minister’s speech commemorated both days and touched on the topic of workplace safety and health, highlighting the advancements made in the area within the past 15 years.

She said that the right to workplace safety and health has now been ensured within the legal framework and that Maldivian workers will soon start to experience the benefits of this law.

“On the occasion of Labour Day, we must remember fair wages. Safe working environments,” the Minister said.

“We accept that challenges still remain in the way of finding dignified work within the workplace. When incidents of differentiation, bullying and anxiety are taking place, we must make it the duty of everyone to fight against and eliminate such discrimination and injustice from the workplace, for the sake of workers,” she added.

She also underscored the role that dignified work plays in the promotion of workplace social justice, economic growth, and sustainable development in the Maldives when it comes to protecting basic rights of workers inclusive of the opportunity to find dignified work.

“One of the biggest goals of the government is to give every worker in the Maldives the dignity and respect they deserve. As such, my biggest request is to shape policies and procedures in a way that ensures workers get the respect they deserve in the fullest sense, and to demonstrate it by action,” Minister Mariya said.

The Minister also called on to the government to double its efforts to improve the working environment and create a reputable labour market for all.
