Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) president and parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed has praised president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for his exemplary conduct and strong campaign efforts during this year's presidential race.

Nasheed praised president Solih for his campaign activities and vigor in the election, and had acknowledged the outgoing president's efforts via X.

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took lead on Saturday's runoff election with over 129,000 votes while Solih received a little over 109,000.

Following the runoff polls outcome, president Solih accepted defeat and congratulated the president-elect.

While acknowledging his former MDP ally's conduct, Nasheed advised MDP members and supporters not to resort to defamation and libel against each other.

After Nasheed faced defeat in the MDP presidential primary, tensions between him and president Solih escalated, leading to the speaker's exit from the ruling party. Nasheed founded The Democrats, along with other high-profile exits from MDP.

The Democrats fielded its candidate Ilyas Labeeb in the presidential election, who came in third during the first round. Amid the campaigning ahead of the first round, Nasheed continued to severely criticize the current government and president Solih.

After Ilyas was eliminated from the presidential race, The Democrats chose neutrality ahead of the runoff election, though it demanded from MDP to hold a public referendum to elect a governance system.

Ilyas submitted a referendum resolution to the parliament which was approved with MDP's support. The resolution demanded to hold the referendum on October 29.
