Velaa Resort launches waste management program to Noonu Atoll on Monday.
This program was launched by General Manager of Velaa Resort Wayne Milgate in a ceremony held in Noonu Velidhoo. President of Noonu Atoll Council and Presidents of the island councils from the administrative islands of Noonu Atoll also attended this ceremony.
"Fehi Kuramaa" program, meaning "Let's make it green," was launched with the aim of aiding the atoll on this issue, and falls under Velaa Island Resort's corporate social responsibility. While the first session under this program was held in Velidhoo, more programs will be held in 13 administrative islands throughout November.
The aim of this program is to educate and raise awareness amongst students and the local citizens of the island on sustainable waste management. All sessions under this program will be carried out experts in waste management.
Speaking at the event, Milgate said that tourism is one of the main parts of the Maldivian economy, and that efforts must be made to prevent the loss of the beauty of the country. Waste management is important in all islands of Maldives to achieve this goal, he said.
Milgate said that they will work to launch similar programs in other atolls in the future.
Velidhoo Council President Athif Hussain said waste management is essential for the whole country, especially Velidhoo. He also said that it is important to create awareness among children from an early age on waste management.
Two awareness sessions were held on Monday for children and adults at Noonu Atoll Education Centre. More than 400 schoolchildren and adults attended both the sessions.
Information on three R's of waste management (reduce, reuse, recycle) was shared during these sessions. In addition to highlighting on the importance of recycling, they also discussed separating and using the waste in different ways.
Each student taking part in the program will be receive a free tote bag, and a water bottle, while adults will receive a tote bag only. These gifts were given to prevent the use of plastic bags and plastic bottles.
