President’s Office’s Spokesperson Mabrook Abdul Azeez, on Wednesday, revealed that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has not yet made a decision on the censure motion submitted to the Parliament against Minister of Communications, Science and Technology Maleeh Jamal.

When questioned by the media, Mabrook admitted that certain issues pertaining to the communications ministry had surfaced some time ago, adding that attempts are underway to fix said issues. However, he did not provide further details, other than disclosing that the “issue of internet” was the most pressing concern.

For years, Maldivians have been demanding cheaper and faster internet services. Prices in the heavily technology-dependent nation are hefty compared to other countries in the same region, leading to constant criticism from the public.

Maleeh has claimed that the communications ministry has concluded its tasks to reduce the price of internet and forwarded the documents to PO. The office has yet to make any comment on the matter.

The approval ratings for Maleeh, appointed to the joint-coalition cabinet on Jumhooree Party’s slot, has been low since the beginning and fell even lower during the past two years.

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) submitted a case to the party’s PG, in November, to make a decision on attempting to remove Maleeh from the cabinet.

MDP PG, at the time, ruled to submit the case to President Solih before finalising a decision.

PO’s Mabrook revealed that the Parliament had addressed a letter to the President regarding Maleeh’s performance as minister. He noted that the President’s decision will be announced shortly.

However, MDP’s PG Leader Ali Azim has already submitted a no-confidence motion against Maleeh to the Parliament.
