Vice President Faisal Naseem met with top officials from the Turkish Green Crescent Society, this Monday.
In his meeting with the Green Crescent, VP Faisal discussed the spread of tobacco and substance abuse in the country and talked about more approaches on controlling such prevalence in the country. The meeting was held at the President's Office.
VP Faisal further discussed with the Turkish Green Crescent Society about ways they can collaborate in tackling these addictions.
The management shared details of some of their work in the region including their tobacco cessation and drug prevention programmes in Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Singapore. Their work mainly focuses on preventing underage smoking and substance abuse.
The meeting, which was also attended by Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, reflected on the current administration’s goals on reducing the prevalence of smoking in Maldives. Existing measures in place include the ban of smoking in all public areas, government buildings and regulating the advertisement and sale of tobacco products.
The President's Office noted that the administration prioritises its mandate to prevent the abuse, peddling and trafficking of drugs, and the rehabilitation of addicted individuals and their reintegration into society.
Founded in Istanbul in the 1920s, the Turkish Green Crescent Society is a non-government, non-profit organization with a vibrant history of combating addictions. The society currently has over 64 branches, 80 representative agencies and 30,000 members.
