President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih called on incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom to prove his integrity in accepting the decision of the Maldivian people during the Presidential Elections on September 23.
President-Elect Solih’s office released a press statement on Sunday after the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the election results, highlighting that a week was spent in confusion after the president file the case to nullify the results at the top court. Furthermore, the press release stated that President Yameen must accept the results and that he should prove his integrity during the transitional phase of the governments.
The President-Elect said that the people of Maldives hope for a peaceful transition of powers. Additionally, Solih dismissed the nullification case, stating that the case lacks any seriousness and that the case was submitted not out of due concern but rather because the incumbent had lost the election.
President Yameen of ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), who lost the election by a wide margin of 38,000 votes to opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, had filed a constitutional case at the apex court, accusing the Elections Commission of committing election fraud and seeking to annul the election results.
Prior to the pronouncement of the verdict, Chief Justice Dr Ahmed Abdulla Didi noted the main points raised in the case filed by the president and stated that the ruling party's legal team had failed to submit any evidence to back their accusations.
After concluding hearings for the case last week, the full bench of the top court unanimously ruled on Sunday that there were no grounds to order the EC to hold the election again.
