Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service (MPS) launched collaborative training programmes late Tuesday.
The training programmes sparked rumours on social media, with some alleging that the authorities are conducting them due to intelligence reports suggesting a terror attack in Maldives.
However, MNDF issued a statement denying these allegations, revealing that the current training programmes are a continuation of exercises that were held at the beginning of the month.
Assuring that there was no specific reason behind the training programmes, MNDF requested the public to share information of any questionable acts with the authorities.
"It is advised to call and inform National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) at 1615 or Maldives Police Service at 119 in case of any suspicious activity", the statement read.
Prior to the training programmes, MNDF had announced that military personnel will operate with weapons in addition to inspecting vehicles and vessels during the exercise.
