The Maldives Red Crescent (MRC) on Tuesday opened a relief fund to help the victims of the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Crescent Societies (IFRC) has issued an appeal for USD 217 million in emergency aid to help those affected by the earthquake, the organisation said in a statement.

In response to the appeal, the MRC has opened a relief fund for people living in the Maldives to start donating money. MRC said that funds can be transferred in Maldivian Rufiyaa and US dollars through their BML and MIB accounts

The death toll from a powerful earthquake on the Türkiye-Syria border has risen to more than 8,700. Since it has been recorded that a large number of people are still trapped under the collapsed buildings, the more parts of the buildings that are removed, the more likely the death toll is to rise.

Various countries have been providing assistance to the affected people as the Turkish government has sought international assistance.
