Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday, said that its investigations into the payment of large sums in compensation for the multiple agreement terminations during the previous administration were ongoing.

Settlement Committee based in President's Office oversaw the repayment of over MVR 1 billion. Although the state moved to pay certain companies huge sums, questions are being raised as to how these transactions were handled.

In October, ACC President Mariyam Shiuna announced the investigation, adding that the commission is closely monitoring the repayment process. She further stated that they have received a number of complaints regarding the compensation and expressed concerned over the lack of transparency in the process.

ACC Ibrahim Shakeel mentioned that they will be looking into individual transactions in detail.

The major compensations carried out by the administration include USD 55 million to Noomadi Resorts Pvt Ltd following the annulment of the agreement, USD 18.1 million following the annulment of the agreement with Nextbiz contracted to develop a border control system, USD 5.6 million to World Link Travels (WLT), MVR 26.1 million to be paid to contractors following the dissolution of the Maldives Road Development Corporation (MRDC), MVR 7 million to be paid by the state in damages following a case of medical negligence.

Furthermore, the state allocated MVR 78 million in compensation for Business Image Group and over MVR 22 million to CGT Pvt Ltd. State has also decided to compensate damages to individuals due to the fraudulent activities of a company contracted to develop flats in the reclaimed suburb of Hulhumale'.

According to the current administration, compensations are being settled because of the illegal annulment of contracts by the previous administration of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
