Election proceeding smoothly: Transparency Maldives

Transparency Maldives stated that the proceedings of the ongoing parliamentary election are going well.

During a news conference held by the graft watch, Project Coordinator Ahmed Tholal said that the voting process commenced and is proceeding well.

He noted that by 0800 hrs, 99 percent of the voting stations had all the required materials. He added that all the ballot papers were counted and all necessary steps to ensure secrecy were taken ahead of vote comencement.

"70 percent of the voting stations opened before 0810 hrs. 90 percent of the stations opened before 0900 hrs. Officials were present on time at most of the polling stations".

Tholal stated that party representatives were present when voting commenced, with 78 percent of observers from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), 33 percent from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), and 24 percent from Jumhooree Party (JP).

He also noted that Transparency are closely observing the one percent of stations where ballot secrecy may be compromised.

Transparency revealed that when voting started, 81 percent of centres had police observing the area.

About 350 observers from Transparency have been deployed to various parts of Maldives, Sri Lanka and Malaysia to observe the proceedings of the parliamentary elections.
