The Civil Court on Thursday ordered the reinstatement of Sergeants Ahmed Asim and Abdulla Riyaz, who were dismissed from Maldives Police Service after the landmark ruling issued by the Supreme Court on February 1, 2018.

The court issued the verdict based on the decision agreed upon by the plaintiffs and defendants at the Dispute Resolution stage.

The ruling also ordered compensations of MVR 189,000 and MVR 199,000 for Asim and Riyaz respectively.

The two officers were among eight who were terminated following the Supreme Court's order to free nine high-profile political prisoners and reinstate unseated legislators. The state had levied several charges against them at the time, but the charges were withdrawn last week Monday.

Six of the officers filed at the court last January regarding their terminations. However, the Civil Court has so far issued rulings only for Asim and Riyaz.

The court also ordered the reinstatement of Ahmed Shaaneez, who was an officer of Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF)'s Special Protection Group, last week.

Compensating individuals who were unjustly laid off by the previous administration is a pledge of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
