Police confirmed that the man captured on video driving in the capital Male’ on Tuesday night, while a child sat in the basket of his motorcycle, is a police offer.
The 10-second video, which circulated across social media platforms on Tuesday, specifically depicts a man swerving and driving along Male’ Ring Road with a child in the basket of his motorcycle, as the headlight shone in the boy's eyes.
Stating they would revoke the man’s license, the police confirmed that the authority, along with its Professional Standards Department and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, is currently investigating the matter.
By law, children under the age of five are required to wear a safety belt or harness when on motorcycles.
As the footage shows the child’s safety is compromised, the Family and Child Protection Department are also looking into the matter.
Police further asserted the importance of abiding traffic safety laws.
