Male City Council, in collaboration with Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure, and Maldives Transport Contracting Company (MTCC), has begun the construction of the fisherman’s park in the capital Male’ to cater for tourists.
The area known as Jetty No.1 was used as a terminal for passengers of cruise ships before the previous administration closed it off and allocated the west of the fishermen’s park instead.
Since, cruise ship operators have raised the issue of sharing the space provided with other vessels. Tour operators have set tents up in the area that cater to the tourists.
According to tour guides, the lack of public toilets is the main issue for the several tourists that visit Male’ on a daily basis.
The Deputy Mayor of Male’ City Council Shamaau Shareef, stated that the new terminal would be outfitted with public toilets and a separate seating area, adding that security will be provided to safeguard the tourists as well.
"While the terminal can be used for the boarding and departing of passengers arriving from cruise ships, other tourists will also be able to use the terminal for various purposes,” said Shareef.
A section of the Fishermen's Park's parking zone was closed off following the commencement of the construction work and Jetty No.1 is currently being used as a temporary terminal base.
