High Court to accept election petitions on voting day

High Court announced, on Tuesday, that individuals wishing to file complaints regarding the elections would be able to do so, during the election day itself.

The appellate court stated that the registration process for filing elections complaints would be open from 0800 until 2200 hours on Saturday, April 6, 2019.

Complaints can also be lodged to the High Court via phone call during closed hours.

According to the Elections General Act, if a petition is to be filed with the High Court, the reasons for the petition and details of the claim, including evidence, must be submitted to the High Court of the Maldives within 14 days following the formal announcement of election results.

Thereupon, the High Court shall deliver judgment on the matter within 30 days following the announcement of the official results of the vote.

The Elections Commission (EC) released a finalised voters' registry on March 18, after opening submissions for complaints regarding the tentative list publicized earlier. A total of 264,442 people are eligible to cast their votes in the parliamentary election.

The High Court has jurisdiction to make final decisions on all election-related issues.

While 387 candidates are vying for 87 constituencies, EC confirmed the placement of 505 ballot boxes for the parliamentary election, including those in countries foreign countries with sizeable populations of Maldivians.
