Iron rod falls from 5th storey, no injuries

A 15-feet long 2-inch wide iron rod fell from the fifth storey of a building under construction in capital Male' on Sunday.

Maldives Police Service revealed that the rod fell from a construction site in Mahchangolhi ward, contracted to Innox Maldives Pvt Ltd.

According to reports, no one was injured in the incident.

Despite the rod landing on motorcycles parked on the side of the road, none of the vehicles sustained any damages.

After Police alerted Male' City Council and Ministry of Housing and Urban Development on the issue, officials from the two authorities visited the site for inspection.

Police have halted ongoing work in the building and revealed that the matter was currently under investigation.

Similar incidents in the construction industry have been scrutinised following the death of Bangladeshi girl, Rawshan Jian who was hit by a cement bag that fell from a construction site last December.

Following the uproar caused by Jian's death, City Council and Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure inspected and halted work in various construction sites.

However, several incidents of objects falling from buildings due to negligence were recently reporte by local media.
