Two minor earthquakes struck a region 608km off the coast of Addu during the early morning hours of Sunday.
According to Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS), the earthquake that took place at 0837 hours was 5.2 on the Richter magnitude scale, and struck the earthquake frequent “Carlsberg Ridge” tectonic plate 10 kilometres below the seafloor.
An earthquake also occurred a minute prior that was 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale, on the same ridge.
Maldives Meteorology Office assured that the country would be unaffected by the earthquakes.
No warnings of a possible tsunami were issued.
