The Elections Commission (EC) announced that after March 19, candidates contesting for parliamentary elections will no longer be allowed to withdraw their names.

According to the commission, withdrawal of names will no longer be allowed as the process of printing ballots papers have commenced.

EC has not revealed who the printer of the ballots is. After the announcement for bidding was done, only M7 Print Pvt Ltd and Novelty Printers & Publishers applied. These were the two parties interested in printing the ballots the previous year as well.

M7 printed the ballots for the last presidential elections held in September 2018.

Three candidates withdrew their names from the parliamentary elections taking place on April 6:

Zahid Rameez from Hithadhoo Medhu constituency, who contested independently.

Mohamed Ilham from Gemanafushi constituency, who is part of the Labour Party.

Ali Ahmed from the Mahibadhoo constituency, who is part of Maldives Democratic Party.

Due to the withdrawal of the three candidates’ names, 387 candidates will now be taking part in the parliamentary elections to be held on April 6.
