PILC press charges against developers of app containing personal information

Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) submitted a case to Civil Court requesting to halt the sales and distribution of an online application containing personal information of individuals.

Recently, a case surfaced of an online application 'Hakulhi', containing personal details of numerous Maldivians. This information was being sold to candidates contesting in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

The law centre filed charges against Abdulla Shuhood, who allegedly developed the application and Abdulla Abdul Raheem who is contesting in the parliamentary elections on Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) ticket.

According to the statement released by PILC, Shuhood and Abdul Raheem are believed to be associated with the application.

PILC, an organization which provides free legal aid to the public, made the case against these two individuals, requesting Civil Court to criminalize and prohibit the act of selling and utilizing personal information.

Furthermore, PILC requested Civil Court to issue an order criminalizing and prohibiting the sales and usage of the information, until the court proceedings conclude.

The online application publicising the personal details of many were met with harsh criticism from the community. Maldives Police Service is currently investigating the matter.
