Police on Monday questioned former defence minister Ameen Faisal over the arrest and subsequent detention of incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in 2010.

Yameen was 'placed under protection' by the army in the presidential retreat for several days during former president Mohamed Nasheed's tenure.

In addition to Ameen, the then chief of defence force Moosa Ali Jaleel was also summoned by the police on Monday.

However, Jaleel who served as the defence minister during president Yameen's administration refused to comment after police questioned him for about six hours.

Ameen told Mihaaru that police questioned him over Yameen's arrest.

"I told them that I don't remember too many details as it happened years ago. But I told them that I never detained president Yameen unlawfully," Ameen explained.

Ameen's lawyer said his client had been accused of kidnapping and arbitrary detention.

Ameen has also been banned from travelling abroad.
