The High Court on Wednesday scheduled the first hearing of former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's appeal against the Criminal Court's detainment order, for March 07.

The Criminal Court's Chief Judge Ahmed Hailam, ordered Yameen's detainment until the conclusion of his investigation trial after prosecutors accused him of attempting to influence witnesses with bribery. Yameen was subsequently taken to Maafushi Prison.

The former president has denied any involvement in influencing witnesses whose identities he claimed to be unaware of, and filed an appeal case on February 19.

Yameen is implicated in the embezzlement of MVR 1.3 billion from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). According to the report recently publicised by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), most of the stolen funds were syphoned to, SOF, a private company which had deposited USD 1 million to Yameen's account at Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).

The Prosecutor General's Office charged Yameen for laundering and deriving a profit from the USD 1 million deposited by SOF to his personal account.
