The governments of Maldives and Saudi Arabia on Sunday signed an agreement on cooperating to strengthen the health sector.

Maldives' Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen and his Saudi counterpart Dr Tawfiq al-Rabiah signed the agreement at a ceremony in Jeddah.

According to the health ministry, Saudi Arabia will assist Maldives in producing professionals for the health industry, develop health institutions and procure more resources for the sector, under the agreement.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, both ministers highlighted the close bilateral lies between the two countries. Minister Ameen further expressed gratitude for the continuous assistance provided by the Saudi government to the archipelago.

The minister is currently on an official trip to participate in the World Health Organisation (WHO)'s Fourth Global Ministerial Patient Safety Summit, being held from March 2 - 3.

He met with the Director General of WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom, earlier the same day with whom he discussed ways to overcome the challenges faced by island nations in providing healthcare services, as well as the challenges in seeking medical treatment abroad and finding qualified doctors.
