EC membership candidates to parliament committee for review

The names of 16 candidates, who applied for Elections Commission (EC) membership, were forwarded to the parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions for review on Tuesday.

The EC opened a slot as current member Ismail Habeeb’s term is due to expire in March. Habeeb is vying for a second five-year term and his name is among the list of candidates submitted by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to the parliament.

The candidates include individuals already employed at the commission, former employees and lawyers.

The 16 candidates (in order of application):

- Shuaib Yoosuf, Male'

- Abdulla Razi, Fuvahmulah

- Ahmed Adheen, Male'

- Ahmed Ali, Hithaadhoo (Seenu Atoll)

- Aminath Saadhiya, Male'

- Mariyam Haneefa Khalid, Kelaa (Haa Alif Atoll)

- Aminath Madheeha, Male'

- Aishath Hafeez, Velidhoo (Noonu Atoll)

- Ali Mohamed Manik, Male'

- Sulwan Ahmed, Meedhoo (Seenu Atoll)

- Ismail Sajid, Male'

- Mohamed Shafiu, Thulhaadhoo (Baa Atoll)

- Mohamed Shamoon, Male'

- Yasir Waseem, Hulhudhoo (Seenu Atoll)

- Ahmed Moosa, Male'

- Ismail Habeeb, Male'

According to the constitution, members must meet the educational and experience qualifications required to work in the commission. Members of political parties are not eligible for membership.

Currently, the EC is comprised of the commission's President Ahmed Shareef, Vice President Amjad Musthafa, and members Ahmed Akram, Abdul Raheem and Ali Nashaath.
