403 candidates to contest for parliament in April

The Elections Commission (EC), on Thursday, announced that a total of 403 individuals submitted candidacy applications for the upcoming parliamentary election.

The window for submissions set by EC ended at 16 00 hours on Thursday.

The elections watchdog also announced that they would reveal the comparative numbers of candidates sponsored by political parties and independent candidates on Saturday.

Ruling coalition's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) announced their intent to contest for all constituencies excluding Nilandhoo which adds up to 86 parliamentary candidates. Meanwhile, Jumhooree Party, another coalition partner is gunning for 42 constituencies.

The coalition of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Peoples National Congress (PNC) and Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has announced intentions to run for 50 constituencies. This consists of 46 candidates from PPM and PNC with the remaining 5 representing DRP.

Supporters of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Adhaalath Party, Maldives Third-Way Democrats (MTD), Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and the Labour party are also set to contest in the April elections.

Prominent individuals running for parliament include former president Mohamed Nasheed, former Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel as well as other former ministers.

According to the Elections Commission, a total of 264,589 eligible voters are registered for the upcoming parliamentary election which is slated for April 6.
