Former president and leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Mohamed Nasheed, met with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, on Friday.

In a tweet after the sit-down, Nasheed stated, "A strong, stable, and prosperous Maldives is not just in the interests of the Maldivian people, but the whole Indian Ocean region".

He did not disclose details of his discussions with Modi.

Prior to his departure to India for a seminar, Nasheed told the press that the relations between Maldives and India would not compromise the independence of the archipelago. He assured that strong military ties between the two South Asian neighbours would benefit both Maldives and the region.

He made the statement amidst recent allegations by the opposition that India was exerting military influence over Maldives after the new administration came to power.
