Maldives committed to protecting human rights: Minister Shahid

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid on Wednesday stated that the government is committed to promoting and protecting human rights in Maldives.

While responding to a letter written by High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, Minister Shahid assured that Maldives is ready to closely cooperate with international human rights mechanisms.

Minister Shahid's letter also stated that the government is eager to strengthen the ties with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human rights and all the procedures of the Human Rights Council.

Additionally, the Minister noted that Maldives had already reached out to to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) and the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID).

This is an essential pledge of the government’s 100-day pledges, instigating a new phase in the relationship with Maldives and international human rights bodies.

Furthermore, Minister Shahid invited Special Procedures mandate holders of the United Nations Human Rights Council, to visit Maldives.
