Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), prepared a document, proposing to allocate MVR 200 as the daily minimum wage for any employee working in the Maldives.

In the documents prepared, MDP proposed amendments to the Employment Act and outlined details on a system to provide a minimum wage.

According to MDP, the minimum wage system would be determined depending on different occupations. Additionally, the minimum wage will be determined as a daily wage rather than a monthly one.

The papers further revealed that minimum wage applies to both permanent and temporary job positions.

Daily minimum wages decided for individuals working in different sectors are as follows:

Transport sector: MVR 266

Fisheries and agriculture sector: MVR 266

Construction sector: MVR 200

Resort handlers: MVR 333

Others in the tourism sector: MVR 200

Health sector: MVR 266

Education sector: MVR 266

Other sectors: MVR 200

Allocating a minimum wage was one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s key electoral pledges.

MDP has opened for public to send in suggestions regarding the drafted papers.
