President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih inaugurated and participated in the Coca-Cola Run in Laamu marathon organised by Total Fitness Group (TfG) in Gan island of Laamu Atoll.
While the marathon commenced with a kids dash on Friday evening, President Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed completed the five kilometre fun run on Saturday morning. A large number of runners participated in the event.
President Solih is currently facing public criticism for participating in an event sponsored by Coca Cola. The government recently increased contribution to the campaign against unhealthy food to a total of MVR 23 million according to its formerly announced policies.
In response to the criticism, Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment Ahmed Mahloof has asserted that the president does not promote any beverage, brand or company despite his participation in the marathon.
Following the ceremony, President Solih toured the Zone Stadium and the Youth Centre in Gan and will visit Fonadhoo island before returning to the capital.
