Minister of Gender, Family and Social Services Shidhatha Shareef stated that there is no question about females deserving equal opportunities in every field, as 50 percent of the population consists of women.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held late Wednesday to swear in the elected members for the third term of Male’ City’s Women Development Committee, the Gender Minister spoke about the challenges women face due to gender bias.
Minister Shidhatha highlighted the difficulties faced by women when contesting for electoral positions, and noted that the involvement of women was low in formulating important decisions.
“Even though a large number of women are involved in political activities, the number of women filling political positions are significantly less”, the Minister noted.
Additionally, Shidhatha stated that economically empowering women would be advantageous to society as a whole. She also emphasized that societal views on women’s responsibilities needed to change.
