Roashanee Building, where Ministry of Health is located, was evacuated along with Majeediyya School following an insecticide leakage around 1100 hours on Tuesday.
The incident occurred when two insecticide bottles that were being moved from storage next to Roashanee Building, fell and cracked releasing about a litre of malathion within the area.
Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) revealed that the expired insecticide bottles were on their way to being transported to Thilafushi for discarding when the leakage occurred.
“Fire team is currently transporting the insecticides to Thilafushi,” MNDF further disclosed.
Following the leakage, two people were taken to the hospital upon losing consciousness.
Health Ministry imparted that some employees were given treatment for symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, and dizziness due to the incident. Some symptoms of malathion inhalation include: - Coughing and breathing difficulties - Watery eyes - Blurry vision - Headaches - Dizziness

The Ministry released a statement advising individuals not to linger around the area, and for households within the area to take precautions such as keeping all doors and windows closed until the effects of malathion wear off.
