Department of Judicial Administration (DJA), on Monday, opened applications for individuals who wish to attain the licence to practice law in Maldives.

The announcement made by DJA stated that applicants will have the opportunity to register for the lawyer’s licence until January 21.

The application requires individuals to hold a degree in Shari’ah or Law. Furthermore, individuals with records of certain crimes are ineligible to be attorneys at law.

A special committee of the Supreme Court will make the final decision to approve of the lawyers.

The Legal Professions Bill, if approved by Parliament, will allow the establishment of a Bar Association which will be responsible for regulation and appointment of lawyers in Maldives.
