Maldives, UAE to form Joint Cooperation Committee

Maldives and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed an agreement to establish a Joint Cooperation Committee, on Monday.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid signed the Memorandum of Understanding at a ceremony held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Signing on behalf of the UAE was Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also attended the ceremony.

According to the Foreign Minister, the establishment of a Joint Cooperation Committee would strengthen bilateral ties between the two counties and facilitate the achievement of common development goals.

The Foreign Minister and Minister of Environment Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan are currently accompanying President Solih on an official visit to UAE. The purpose of the visit was to attend the inauguration of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) and Zayed Sustainability Awards Ceremony on January 14.

President Solih was invited to make a state trip by the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of Armed Forces of the UAE, Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Diplomatic relations between Maldives and UAE have experienced an improvement with a recent agreement enabling locals to travel to the UAE without acquiring a visa. Effective from January 1, all locals who hold a valid diplomatic, official or ordinary passport will be granted a one-month visa upon entry into the UAE
